meat cake. MEAT CAKE!
By the looks of this picture, you might think that I should categorize this under baking or desserts. Oh sweet Viginia, this is not that kind of cake. In fact, you might want to consider eating this meal in reverse.
Before I go any further, let me say that I have not made this cake. I do not have any experience in making such a device. In all honesty, I don't know who in my circle of people would eat this. I have been given permission by the Black Widow Bakery to reproduce this recipe and photo for the world to see. Because I think it is awesome.
So without further delay .. ladies and gentlemen .... MEAT CAKE!
For the Meat
For the glaze
For the "Frosting"
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix the meat ingredients in a large bowl. Distribute meat evenly across 3 8-inch round cake pans. Bake all three in the oven for 45 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 170. Remove from oven immediately and turn the "cakes" out onto wire racks to let the grease drain and cool.
Make the layer glaze by combining the glaze ingredients in a saucepan and heating until combined.
Level the cake by cutting the rounded tops off of the meat with a large serrated knife. Stack the meat rounds on top of each other with a layer of the glaze in between each one. Round out the cake for evenness by using your large knife to cut around the edges.
Decoration Make a "crumb coat" for the cake by spreading a thin layer of the cooked potatoes around the sides and on the top. Let is set for a moment, then finalize the "frosting" by really spreading it on thick. You can use a piping bag and tips with the potatoes just as you would with real frosting.
For this version, Vashti used some ketchup and some fancy artwork skills to make a T-Bone picture on the top of the cake.
Big thanks to Vashti of the Black Widow Bakery for allowing us to post this recipe and the pictures. The original post was more of a procedure with pictures rather than a recipe, so I cleaned it up for Men in Aprons' purposes. Please visit the The Black Widow Bakery to see the entire process of making a meat cake, as well as some other totally awesome creations.
