Pyrex Adds Silicone to New Line

Seems like every kitchen product company is getting into the silicone game. And why not? The stuff is durable and works well under intense heat. Pyrex touts the new Accents Collection as being good for "grip-ability." The new prep and bakeware include little silicone accents at the handle points, as well as silicone grip pads underneath some of the measuring cups.

I appreciate that Pyrex is jumping on the silicone bandwagon. The only problem I have with this is a matter of logic. Silicone is known and used for its physical propery of being high-heat resistant. The problem is that Pyrex is not marketing these products for silicone's heat resistance. They are marketing the piece for their grip-ability.

Sure, if Pyrex had used plastic or rubber for the anti-slip measures, those would melt in the oven. The only problem I have with pieces like this is that while silicone doesn't melt in an oven, it will get hot. So the "grip-ability" is moot because you couldn't grip it anyway without burning your hand.

I can definitely get into the idea of not-slip measuring cups like this one here. Many a times been where I have spilled a liquid because the container slipped across the formica countertops. However, I am not convinced of the silicone usage in the bakeware. But only time will tell if Pyrex got this one right.

I've avoided buying silicone because I'm not convinced that it won't give me cancer in a few years. And this entry into the market just sounds silly.
