Onion Dip
This is a repeat of an entry I posted a year ago with a slight twist. TheWife and I made this last night while recording an episode of the Men in Aprons Show. This is another example of something you can make and save your money at the store. Now that I think of it, this might actually be more expensive to make than to buy a tub from the dairy case, but it will be more satisfying to make it yourself AND AND AND ... it tastes better.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 1/2 cups diced onions
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, in all
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1 large round loaf of fresh baked bread, preferably sourdough
In a large skilled, heat the oil over medium heat then add the onions and 1/4 Teaspoon of salt. Reduce heat and cook until very soft, about 20 minutes. Let cool. In a seperate bowl, mix the remaining ingredients together and add the onions. Stir.
Take your round bread loaf and cut a hole in the top as if you were cutting the top of a pumpkin. Make the hole at least the width of a chip that might get dipped. With your hands (GASP!) pull out a lot of the dough on the inside to make room for the dip.
Pour in the dip and enjoy! This can be done a day ahead of your event. Just put the cap back on the hole, wrap the bowl in saran wrap and refrigerate it.
