Just Get in There and Do It!

My name is Adam and I will be your tour guide for today. I am a man and I cook. I am not a chef. I did not go to culinary school. I have visited Paris, but only as an American tourist. (Take that, Pierre!). I do not have any formal training in the culinary arts, nor do I wish to ever stand in a school for cooking. If you are here, it is likely that you are the same as me. As a man, I enjoy cooking because I love to create. I love the sights and smells. I love making something that tastes good and seeing people enjoy it. Most of all, I love the attention that I get when someone finds out that I cook. "You cook? No way." Way. Over the past 7 years, I have been doing a lot of cooking for my family. In this time, I have read many cookbooks and watched many hours of cooking shows on television. Food Network happens to be one of my favorite channels along with PBS on Saturday. The problem with these books and programs is that a majority of them do not gear their instruction to extreme novices, or men. More specifically, they use instruction as if each and every viewer were getting ready to go to Cordon Bleu and already had a large knowledge base of cooking information. They use fancy language and technical terms that the average dude does not understand. Sure, the end products are great and probably very tasty, but the road to that destination is fraught with way too many ingredients, complex terminology, and flawed instruction that would make the most hardy man cringe with horror. I suppose it would be the acme of foolishness to say that this site is 100% for men. As I've spent some time thinking about the purpose of this, I've come to the conclusion that both men and women could benefit from this site. I'm more than certain there are women out there who need a little guidance in the kitchen as well. So get in there. It's not as bad as you think. You might surprise yourself with what you can do. And you might impress someone else. You can do it. We believe in you. Go. Now. Do it. |
